XRaid for Audio ???

MessageAuthor

I was wondering if the new XRaid could be used like a giant hard disc for pro tools recording. This way, i can just have each client buy a drive. Thanks!

RE: XRaid for Audio ???

Digiengineer boy are you wrong . You just need to reach out and learn... First of all raid 1& 0 has very poor performance UNLESS you have an PCI RAID ( IDE-SCSI )PCB . Now lets disscuss Xraid I have done a lot of research with Apple on this topic . And first of all if you want to use a RAID with audio you would never use level 1 or 0. Raid level 3 and 5 have outstanding performance and are the 2 most viable RAID levels for audio and dig vid. The Xraid is an outstand unit for the price nothing even comes close. I spent 50k 3 years ago...on a systen with slower through-put . the Xraid does not have as much flexability as the other high end RAID systems but the cost factor has a lot to be desired. The Xraid will not work in Active-Active mode and the RAID controllers will not reach a cross to the other side . But the cost of a spare RAID controller and power supply is only around 1 grand . all the META data is stored on the volumes which means if a RAID controller fails you just hot swap in another one and your back up in minutes and since its RAID 3 or 5 if a drive fails the RAID controller kicks in a rebuilds the drive in minutes again no lost data at all. there is even a option for the cache back up battery which means that you wont even loose the data that was going to the RAID volumes just before a failure . the Xraid is usable on a full fabric network with the use of a fibre switch . and oh yea its Fibre at 2 gigabit per sec. and there are 2 fibre ports (one for each controller ) This unit is not yet available for purchase but as soon as it is you know I'm there. If you plan on using it with multiple Protools systems you will need volume management software from Charismac (fibreshare) or Atto ( Acellware ) Protools will see the volumes and will work with amazing results !!! the Xraid can only be Admin'd Via OSX but can be acessed from any fibre port with OS9 to MS .

Thanks for the info, dude. The Xraid wasn't part of the test because it's technically unavailable, but if you have had access to a test unit, I would love to see the data. I think it's worth a lunchtime dicussion, call me.
