Midi Crashes Reaper

I'm having trouble with importing midi files into Reaper. I use the Insert Media command to import a SMF into a new project. After using the save project as command and then use the close project command immediately, it will close correctly. If I wait a bit, the close project process will hang up. This seems to happen with many different SMF files from different sources. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Thanks for any help you can give.

I have attached a couple of the files. They are free ones (could be the problem) that I was going to convert into background tracks.

Hello jazz1960man and welcome to these forums. You'll find many helpful people here and a lot of useful information. All OK here -- I dragged the file in from Windows Explorer, clicked the tool-bar button and Saved it, waited 15 seconds and click the [x] to close Reaper. I reckon that it is something-else in the project or your audio / MIDI set-up. What gear are you using?

RE: Midi Crashes Reaper

Thanks for the welcome. I am using an HP Pavilion laptop computer with an AMD quad core processor. The computer has 1.8Ghz processor and 8Gb of Ram, 64 bit operating system. I am thinking that I had a 64 bit version of Reaper installed at one point and went back to 32 to make sure plug-ins (mostly free) were compatible. I just upgraded to the latest version of Reaper, but I had problems on two of the previous versions. Similar files had worked in the past. I have removed all file locations from the VST plug-in paths and completely removed a couple of VST's that I was suspicious of. I have considered uninstalling Reaper and do a complete new installation.

I can also import those .mid files with no problem. Are you using the latest version of REAPER?

they import fine here also... you could try this: do another install of reaper as portable... just check the portable box in the installer and put reaper into a new folder on your HD, ... like REAPER PORTABLE let is all be default settings except for your audio interface and midi settings in pref's... then try to import to that...

Thanks for your input. I think the problem is solved. In June I installed CoolSoft Virtual Midi Synth and think that was the problem. I don't remember if I had it and the Microsoft synth both enabled, but uninstalling the CoolSoft product seemed to correct the problem. Thanks again!!!

RE: Midi Crashes Reaper

I have some (all free). My intent is to use Proteus XV much of the time (I initially thought it was causing problems) but need a General Midi sound set to identify the required sounds for MIDI tracks. Some authors just name the track with numbers and don't list the sound for the tracks. I don't like the standard sounds, just need them for short term use. I also have the TX16W sampler and many softsynths to use. Started exploring Soundfonts, but got a little confused.
