For mixing I use two sets of monitors (one set at a time of course) and an old Awai stereo...and I put on a pair of Ipod headphones...I start with my favorite monitors (KRK vxt8) and when it's good there I check all the other ones...always looking for a happy medium...if this is redundant please excuse my rambling...the key to the whole sheebang is several reference CD's or whatever format you dig...when you know what sounds good through YOUR monitors...train them ears...it makes mixing your creations much easier...and I'll shut my piehole...now MD

RE: Studio Monitors

im just wondering if i get a good mix on the monitors does that mean it'll automatically sound good on generic speakers? (car, computer speakers, etc) supposedly these monitors are giving me an accurate representation of the music. it would stand to say if its good here it'll be good anywhere right?

..what I really start to like in Reaper is its routingstuff. One of the things I'm going to do when time permits me is using the Mastersends to setup an active monitorsystem, all filtering done on Reaper's masterchannel. One of the biggies in monitoring is to avoid bassloudspeakers that compress the sound. Most homesystems do that, one can make serious mistakes mixing on those. They also tend to add some serious distortion in the LF region. Better get oversized monitors than handy little ones, or a good servosub. The bigger the bassloudspeaker, the lower it's resonantfrequency. Around that frequency serious delays in LFreproduction pop up, along with horrible impulseresponse. Check your mixes of different systems, that's the key. And get a good pair of cans, with a Chinese class-a headphoneamp (with an spdif-input). Since I use Sennheiser's HD-25 on such an outboard headphoneamp my mixes have improved a lot.
