Korg M50 and reaper trouble

MessageAuthor

Hi everybody! I just yesterday bought a korg m50, and I should be able to use it as a Vsti in reaper. But being the total noob that I am, I can't get it to work as I'd wanted it to. The thing I'm trying to achieve is that i could record different sounds to different tracks in reaper, and basically compose a whole song using just that piece of equipment. BUT, even after having read all the manuals I could find, I still can't get it to work :( So the question is, how do I record sounds from my M50 into reaper? It's connected by a USB cable to my computer. I can get the notes I play on it into reaper, but I can only hear the sounds if i plug my headphones straight into the M50. ReaSynth on the otherhand works just fine, that is I can hear the sounds through my speakers, which are connected to my computer. The problem is probably somewhere in the routing, but I just can't figure it out. So if anyone could help me, I would really appreciate it :) Oh, and I apologize if what i've written is hard to understand, but I tried my best to explain the situation with the little knowledge that I have :D

RE: Korg M50 and reaper trouble

Welcome to the forums! :) A VSTi is a virtual MIDI instrument plugin, your M50 is MIDI hardware. You can't use it like a VSTi (just looked on the product page, at least this function is not being mentioned there and only very few synths have that). Reaper is "playing" (and recording) your M50 via MIDI - MIDI is not carrying audio, only your keypresses and so on are recorded and played back via the USB cable. That's why you have to plug your headphones into the M50 to hear something. To get the sound into Reaper, you have to record it (additionally) as an audio file, using a cable from the outputs of the M50 to the line inputs of your audio interface or your soundcard. Once the soundcard is set up for recording, arm a track, select the audio input and record it on a separate audio track while playing back the MIDI track.

RE: Korg M50 and reaper trouble

Hi I too have an M50 and after about 5 hours trying to get the sounds from the keyboard into Reaper without success, it dawned on me.... The M50 comes with a disc containing the "Plug-in Editor". Fire this up and use it as a VSTi. The keyboard will act as a standard MIDI controller but you can get all of the M50 sounds into Reaper via the Plug-in Editor. Hope this helps.
