A newbie question about computer+digi001

Hello everyone, I'm sure you have probably heard this question over and over again but if someone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it. I plan on buying the Digi001 in January, I currently own a Dell dimension XPS 700. I am also getting the Glyph 30GB external hard drive and I will be boosting my memory to 768. Here are some of my concerns. First of all do I need to have a computer that is completly dedicated to recording? Will a computer at 700mhz be to slow? I have deleted my OS which is windows 98 2nd version and reinstalled it to clear up some disk space. Some of the current progams I have on it are Microsoft office, Real player,WinMX, and Intervideo winDVD. And quite a few Mp3 files as well as my email and few minor things. Do I need to get rid of these programs? Right now I can't afford another computer, will this be allright for now? Thanks to anyone who answer's these questions.

700mhz should be ok for small to medium size sessions. The main thing to check is that the chipset on your motherboard is compatible. (Click on the compatibility link at the top of this page). If you're running a VIA chipset with a Pentium processor you'll most likely have big problems. Having other software installed is ok as long as they are not running at the same time as PTLE. Don't put more than 512 meg RAM in. Some people have had negative performance problems with more than this. Good luck. Mark

You may run into some small snags. With a PIII 700 you will run alot more tracks with 2 drives one for OS and one for Recording. Slot placement and IRQ assignments are very important to getting your system running the right way. Call Dell and get the specs on the motherboard. Open the case and find out what is plugged into what slot. Usually the Digi runs well in slot 2 or 3 in a 5-slot board and my guess is you have an ATX-Slot-1 CPU If you have a BX chipset you’re going to have few problems. Break out your bios manual, and see if your system supports IRQ changes manually. Most custom systems do but allot of Dell and Gateway systems have integrated motherboards that do not support many changes and tweaking. A PIII-700 was last years MID speed model. Funny how fast technology works? Anyways shot me the specs of your system via e-mail at I will take a look at them and see what advice I can give you for setting up your machine. Justin L.
