Modulation/envelope write problem

I'm sure this is a really stupid (AKA hopefully easily answered) question... I've just got a midi controller so want to start writing out modulation envelopes on the fly, rather than just drawing them by hand. I'm successfully controlling the synth, have got everything ticked and armed in the envelope menu (see pic) but the envelope curve stays flat when running the track and twisting the dial (however the envelope lane slider does move in sync with the synth's parameter modulation as I turn it). What am I doing wrong?!
