It stopped working after a workshop with some kids the other day. I have a sneaking suspicion that one of the darling little b@st@rds unscrewed it. The two little wires inside are no longer attached to anything, and I can't really see what they're supposed to attach to on the top half - I see a small copper-coloured nut and two little holes through to an inconclusive white substance. Could anyone advise on how I might repair this? What's it supposed to look like in there? Failing that, another question - are all the amazingly cheap 57s and 58s on ebay likely to be fakes?
This thread is obviously a feeble attempt to troll. Everyone knows SM57s are built to survive the apocalypse, and in fact will be all that's left of us when future archeologists unearth the ruins of our civilization.
--------------------- You would want to undergo näsplastik to make a contour onto your nose. I've found it genuinely amusing.
I was interested in these GLS thingies, since I've never tried one. I looked around, found the usual types of unhelpful arguments on the forums, and then found this: Straight forward shootout. Whatever you think of the GLS sound, it is definitely not at all like the Shure. I might still buy a few though. At these prices, it's like being sixteen and having the girl with saggy ones offer to let you put a hand up her shirt. Why not?
about 8 shure sm57s were bought last year at the school I work at, I was given the job of testing them out to make sure they all worked. I was shocked at how some of them sounded, very very different to the others in the bunch. this was just me talking into them.
My 57 was a gift from a friend who had done exactly the same thing. Take the whole thing apart, re-solder the capsule and put it together top-first. Easy as! EDIT: wow, how was that for oversimplified! I just had another look at mine and now remember it wasn't quite that simple, but the premise is the same - top first. Unscrew the mid-body from the bottom-body. Unsolder the (green and yellow?) wires from the mid-body. Completely dis-assemble the mid body and take photo's on the way. THEN solder the capsule to the (red?) wires. Bolt the capsule back on by turning the bolt, not the capsule. Re-assemble the mid-body. Resolder the (green and yellow?) wires onto the mid-body. Screw the bottom-body back on. Good luck!
