advice needed with virtualdub

i have tried to alter the set custom format but everytime i try to change a setting all i get is error418 unsupported video format

Sounds like your drivers won't support hi-rez caps, if you're using the manufactures default drivers, try these:

thanks for the advise, will this driver help take the background noise off the audio ?

nope, video tapes just have a lot of noise. u have to use the "save WAV... " option to make a WAV file from the audio track and use an audio-editing software like CoolEdit to filter noise. don't forget to mute CD and MIC-line in while recording... they often add a tremendous amount of noise. u also might try not to use your capture card's audio-tuner and connect the VCR to your sound card instead.
