Could you maybe show us your whole setup and what you are trying to achieve? You have a hardware MIDI controller (or synth) plugged into your computer? You record MIDI coming out of that controller into two tracks in Reaper? The sounds you are hearing when you record are coming from your MIDI synth or VSTi in Reaper? The sounds you are hearing when you play back your recording are coming from your MIDI synth or VSTi in Reaper?

RE: playback issue

Hi Xpander, thanks for your reply. I have a synth with a usb cable plugged into the usb on my comp. I am using the audio out of the synth which is actually being use as a midi player for the vst's plugged into the 2i4 channel 2 input. All the media settings in reaper are asio then I chose focusrite usb ASIO as the audio device, it is also set as default in windows as the player and recorder. It is set from enable input is checked and 1st and last are inputs 1 and 2. Output is set for output1 and output2 I am using the synth as a midi and recording music from the vst's into reaper on track 1 and track 2. I used the insert virtual instrument on new track for two different vst's. I just don't hear sound from track 1 coming out, track 2 I can hear clearly after I recorded them.. The sounds I am hearing are coming from the vst on track 2 only. The sounds are coming from the vst's. I know I'm doing something wrong. I think I'm doing something wrong with the cable set up. Hope you can help:)P.S. When I recorded track 1 I played it back just fine, it's just that I can't hear it after I recorded track 2.

RE: playback issue

Thanks for the description. There's maybe some confusion about the terms used, so can't quite tell what is going on. First, VST or in this case probably VSTi (virtual instruments) are something you would have inserted on your Reaper tracks, not something that your external synth has. So if you would want to play those VSTis, you only need the MIDI output from your synth into Reaper, nothing else. If you see MIDI being recorded into those two tracks, you should be fine in that regard, no external cabling changes needed. And if you didn't change the MIDI channels and settings in your VSTis, you should hear both playing back as well, just like when you recorded the MIDI. Maybe you could verify that you really did hear both VSTis playing when you were recording? If you have any audio cables coming out of your hardware synth, disconnect them. They are not needed for the MIDI output and will only confuse the setup at this point. After that, play your synth and see that both VSTis you have set up in Reaper will respond to that.

RE: playback issue

Thank you very so much. That did the trick. I unplugged the cable from the back of the Korg Minilouge and unplugged it from Scarlett. I also unplugged the usb from the synth and comp. It is working just fine. Now it's 9:00 PM Eastern U.S. am I'm tried but want to get on the synth. I have composed 8 different (Ambient/Ethereal/Pop)genre and am excited to get to work because my friend who is an oldie Rocker is coming over Weds to critic it. Thank you again Xpander you are very knowledgeable and kind. Artemus.

You're most welcome Artemus. Nice to know you got it working, my part was mostly just wondering what is going on there. ;) And indeed, 4:15 AM here, maybe time for the bed...
