Reaper is crashing when I try to "remove" a VST ??

MessageAuthor

Simply that, I have a couple of Modern Painter graphic EQ's inserted into an item, I've been trying to delete them, but when I do Reaper crashes, it won't let me. Any ideas folks ? I did insert two by mistake, it's when I try and delete the second one it makes Reaper crash. I guess I'll just have to leave them there until I finish this project, but it's annoying. ARP.

Almost certainly a bug in the plugin (it's a common programming error not to support multiple instances or multiple threads). If you open the project in recovery mode (start Reaper with "create new project", then load the problem project and check "recovery mode" in the project load dialog), you should be able to delete one of the plugins and save the project (use a new name!) Then open the renamed project, select all tracks, and run the action "set all FX online for selected tracks".

Thank's Shwa, I'll give it a go, plug-in bugs seem to cause more problems than anything else ! ARP.

start reaper up with no project loaded (there are a couple of ways to do this, check the reaper folder in start menu/programs). open the fx browser in a new track, find the plugin that is crashing, right-click it, and select: "run as: dedicated process". close down reaper, start it up again and you should be able to load/fix up the project without problems.

RE: Reaper is crashing when I try to "remove" a VST ??

Right now I'm feeling a little disillusioned with Reaper, as every time I try and complete something I always have trouble of some kind, I also feel that the provisions for using control surfaces should be more comprehensive. I'll stick with Reaper for now but I'm looking around for another DAW, I thought my search was over, but unless I can get Reaper to be more reliable, I simply don't feel safe using it ?? I suppose this all comes down to what you want to do and how you want to work, I work entirely with audio files, no Midi, and I use a lot of plug-ins, and VSTi's, and have just started to use a lot of tracks as well, sometimes as many as 25/30 tracks on one piece, and it takes ages to load up as a project progresses. I'm not going to give up just yet, and I'll start my next project in Reaper. When I do get incompatibility problems I try the offending VST/VSTi in Samplitude and all is OK, but Samplitude isn't so intuitive to use as Reaper, it's swings and roundabouts, when will the day come whe we get offered "A DAW for all seasons" :) something that is all things to all men....(and women) :)

I went to download that plugin to check it out, but I don't see "Modern Painter EQ" or any sort of graphic EQ in the full download pack from here: Is the plugin still offered? I see that these are "save as VST" plugins, meaning they were made with a plugin-making application. If it is in fact an older plugin, and was made with a kit, it wouldn't be surprising if it had multiple-instance sort of problems.

ARP, if it's any help, stability is my Number 1 priority,i'll take it over bells and whistles anyday. I too use mainly audio and VSTI's and I also work at 96k which taxes a computer.I find reaper to be very stable here, I've had one crash since working on my current project, that happened when I did an 'undo' after an edit but also after I'd bounced a load of VSTI tracks to audio and deleted the VSTI tracks so the undo reloaded all my vSTI's/samples! I'm 3 weeks into this project and Reaper's been used 12-14 hours a day so you can see it's working very well :) MC

Hi, I think it's unfair of me to blame Reaper for what is obviously a dodgy plug-in, and as Schwa said, it's probably very old. I've deleted that plug-in now anyway, that's what I do, remove things that cause problems, it just makes future problem solving a lot easier. ARP
