Make Up My Mind

I have to agree with jimmyk on this. I bought a used Mix Plus system earlier this year...certainly a much more expensive decision than yours. As far as RTAS plugins are concerned, I think you can rest assured they'll be plenty of them. Remember, the 001 is selling like mad...that means a huge market for plugs. The plugin manufactures may have a bigger potential market for RTAS plugs than TDM. Thats all the pressure they need. The same is true for cross platform support. If Windows 001 systems flood the market, as I'm sure they already are, the plugs will follow. I definately wouldn't worry about higher sample rates and such, for many reasons. You'll find many threads here on the 24/96k issue. I think you'll find that even the majority of TDM owners aren't even interested in it, and feel that the extra file size and performance problems wouldn't be worth it (even for those with $7000 D/As etc). I don't think Digi has any plans for this in the foreseeable future, especially not for 001. I think that most of the improvements that are likely to happen will be available to you for cheap or even free software upgrades. The amount you get with 001 for that kind of money is nothing short of astonishing....go for it . Tom [This message has been edited by tld (edited July 11, 2000).]

RE: Make Up My Mind

Thanks for all the input so far. jimmyk - I am now living in the humble land of recording to cassette tape . In fact, I don't even currently own a computer. (I had to sell my 7500 3 years ago to help buy a house.) So as far as purchases go, I am really starting at ground zero. Also, I apparently was misguided in my worry about the number of plug-ins. I was looking at the plug-in finder under MacOS and RTAS and only coming up with a short list. But this morning I looked at the "All" list and every single plu-in listed was shown as RTAS. Go figure. As far as multiple undo's go. I still would really like to see this, but I will leave this discussion to the many other threads that cover this subject. But having never actually recorded with PT (just played the demo and fiddled with faders at MARS) how do you deal with no stereo file support? It seems like a basic function to me. Any advise is appreciated. I also understand that this package is a very good value, but there is still a bit of fear in getting into a proprietary system. I really don't mind being "locked" in if I'm locked into the best, but it still makes me cautious. Maybe you all can ease my fears. This UC is one BIG plus for this system. I am always learning something. Keep the responses coming. cedricl - Do you have a microphone in my house? ------------------ Jason A.

RE: Make Up My Mind

your main investment here is going to be the computer, so first go buy yorself a mac G4. Then you can get your software and other hardware. If you need SMPTE you may want to look at other systems, I think digi will wise up and come around on that issue. Get the computer and then we can talk more. j

RE: Make Up My Mind

j, Listen, I used a TDM MixPlus system regularly for a year before buying myself a 001. Quite frankly I was astonished - for all intents and purposes - this thing handles, in day-to-day use, virtually indistinguishably from the real deal - incredible for the money. The main differences, of course, are system slowdown with excessive plugin use (you can still get a s**tload in there!) and lack of SMPTE full sync and spotting functionality (unless you need to lock to an external analogue transport or are involved in video post production, don't worry too much about it.) If you haven't USED Pro Tools before in anger then take it from me, it's far and away the most professional, reliable, intuitive and damn near perfect digital audio workstation that exists. Remember, Pro Tools was developed from the ground up as an AUDIO recording and editing system. Cubase, Logic, et. al. spent most of their formative years as pure MIDI workstations. If you're working in the digital domain with audio, well ... figure it out for yourself. Despite what anyone may tell you, audio editing in MIDI '& audio' sequencers remains quirky at best and, at worst, prohibitively cumbersome. Believe me, I was once a big time VST advocate.... Marry a 001 with a G4 however (don't get me started on the whole PC thing...), and you're laughing. Rather loudly. Quash those doubts and take the plunge - you'll thank yourself 100 times over that you did. m.
