Noobie question

OK I'm using Sonic MYDVD 3.5 I found out I could just add video clips Iv'e downloaded from all over the net and MyDVD would transcode them and I can make a DVD. Nice now here is where I have trouble. I have some I think DivX movies around 730 meg avi files. When I add them to Sonic MyDVD its too big to fit 5.8 gig. I know theres many ways to change the file size re-encode use nandub to cut the beginning and end off etc... but I want to know what is the easiest and quickest way to be able to get this to DVD format? Right now I'm trying re-encode with Vidomi output 75% of origanal but I don't know if this will work is'nt the time a factor?

RE: Noobie question

Ok now I opened Nandub and loaded the avi which I found out is divx3 anyways I selected full proccess and used the 2to1 filter to resize it in half and used divx4 low motion codec after re-encoding I had a 440 meg file. I thought I was onto something untill I tried to load it into Sonic MYDVD it said it was too big again and showed as over 9 gig on the DVD. This is crazy so framesize isn't the answer. File Size isn't the answer. My guess is it just has to do with time in minutes soley??? so do I have to cut 15 minutes off to fit it? I tried to make it a VCD but then it wants to burn to a CDR and is over 900 meg as a VCD so this Divx movie that is a 730 meg avi looks to me Im gonna have to just burn it to a CDR or DVD as a Divx AVI unless someone can tell me how I can make it fit onto a DVD as DV??

RE: Noobie question

I talked to a friend today who knows more than I on this subject. Here is what he said. Since the 720 meg file is already on the harddrive it can't be done but he said he knew a trick to fit it all on a DVD. Here is what he said. Since a DVD is 120 minutes long. And a normal movie is 90 minutes he said if I play the divX file out of a S Video jack from video card to a Digital Camcorder. Then playback the recorded video capturing it in MYDVD it would fit because it would meet the time requirements. Can anyone explain why this would work? Playing a DivX file is still the same amount of time. I don't get it but he says he has done it and it works.

RE: Noobie question

u r missing the whole point here. What sonic does is that it tries to reencode the avi file in its own set of rules that clearly don't do for u. My guess that it encodes the video in CBR and audio in wav. In a 90min audio wav u end up in aprox. 1.5gb of space. As for the CBR a modest 3mbs is more than a dvd-r can bear. I suggest to demux in nundub audio from video. Reencode the video in tmpg or CCE for example using vbr and leave audio in its ac3 format. U can have more than 120mins of video in xcellent quality and ac3 sound in a dvd-r this way. ps. can u check if u can change the way sonic transcodes the avi to m2v?

RE: Noobie question

Thanks for the idea and input Ill play around with it this weekend and see what I come up with. I have tmpeg never used it much and I will look for the other one you mentioned. Also no MYDVD doesnt let you control any of the transcode process :(
