Hi people I am in the market for a condensor mic for acoustic guitar and vocals. I have a budget of exactly 500.00 dollars. I have always fantasized about having one of these and now I can afford one. I am lookin at the Rode ntk and the new carvin multipattern condensor(Both are right under my budget). Primaririly I will use it for acoustic micing but I want a killer vocal mic also so I need one mic to do both. I need your advice on this one!! P.S. Ik multimedia rules for giving us windows guys our first soft synth rtas (Sample tank!!) +amplitube!!!!
I really like small diaphram condensors for acoustic guitar. For $500 bucks you could get a small diaphram(Octava mc012) and a large diaphram(octava mkl2500) both very nice mics for the money. The mkl2500 is a large diapham tube condensor that has a very rich, warm sound. The mc012 is great for acoustic guitar, vocals, hihat. check it out
IMHO in your price range, and for your needs, (acoustic guitar and vocals) the Rode NTK is the perfect choice. You might also want to look for a used AKG C414B-ULS, but I'd go for the Rode, it is amazing. Killer on reeds too!!!!!! Hope this is helpful.
Here's my advice: Phil's advice is right one the money. You can get the NTK for vocals and the oktava m012 small diaphram condensor for your guitar. That way you won't have to compromise. I have the oktava and it sounds wonderful on guitars and piano. I bought a pair for $200 from GC and miking the guitars and strings in stereo is a quantum leap up from mono. You have to be very careful about the quality control with the oktava mics. It's real spotty. Carefully inspect each one from GC before you buy it. Shake it to make sure nothing rattles inside. Insist on plugging it in and make sure it works before you buy it. I had to go through about 10 before I found two that were perfect. Some had dings and dents on them, one didn't work, one had something loose inside, and the metal grill came off about 5 of them. However, the ones that work are great mics. Another alternative for vocals: I have a studio project C1 (large diaphram) ($250) for vocals and it compares favorably to a neumann u87 that I had used before. A lot of other people on this board like this mic too for vocals. You could get this mic and 2 oktava m012's for under $500. I haven't used the NTK but Allen Hallada and others say it gives excellent vocals through the 001 preamps. Mark
Thanks Mark I will definetly be inspecting those octavas!!!!!!!!!!!!! Two would be sweet for a massive stereo guitar sound.Lets say I want to use my sm 57 on my guitar cabinet and the Rode NTk for like a room sound at the same time,am I going to have phase problems?
