In going through the Digi001 literature, I haven't really seen any mention of Firewire External Drives as a storage medium with the 001 system. I would assume that they should work... But I don't really want to find out the hard (and expensive) way. Why my interest in the Firewire system versus an internal or external SCSI set up? Well, the Firewire drives are hot swappable. The drives have a very fast access time. And I wouldn't be eatting up another dang PCI slot with a SCSI card. Yes, I know, the Firewire drives are kind of expensive... But like all things computer related, they should come down in price fairly soon (I hope). Anyways, any comments? Suggestions?

Same here.... I heard that they might be tested in the future. If there would be any glitches, what could they possibly be? Talk about a fast easy set-up!
Firewire is currently not tested, not supported. Digidesign has plans to begin testing Firewire drives in the near future. Keep an eye on our web site and the Digidesign Announcements section of this forum for further developments in this area. Gregg Montgomery Product Specialist Digidesign
Well C'mon Digi some of us bought these hot new Mac machines as our first computer and you tell us we have to go backwards to the old scsi stuff when we clearly can use superior and cheaper new products. Let's put 50 guys on this right now OK?

Uh... So does this mean that a Firewire Drive would not work at the moment (but might in the future), or that Digidesign just doesn't know if they would work? I find it pretty hard to believe that Firewire technology has been untested... After all, the Blue and White G3's came with two (count 'em! Two!) Firewire ports specifically so that the PCI slots wouldn't get eaten up by a mass of high speed peripheral devices. Anyways, is there anybody out there in non-linear recording land who has actually hooked up a Firewire drive to their G3 (or G4)? What were the results of this experiment? Do you still have a working computer? Matt Monroe
Do a search on firewire - lots of posts on this. No it's not supported. Doesn't mean it doesn't work. It does mean if you do have problems you may be on your own. Lot's of folks using it for backup and recording though. Bob.
