Question for those who have "Allow trim of MIDI items when splitting" pref turned off

*Firstly.. This pref is on by default and I'm not suggesting switching the option off to try it out, just hunting for those who use it this way! When 'off' it allows you to preserve the chopped MIDI data when you split so you can drag out again to reveal the previous data still intact as you do with audio I have been using this setting but have run into an issue that you don't get when splitting is set to trim. If you have a single item with CC or bank/program messages and split any point after those messages, the new second item shows that there is CC activity at its start on the main window. If you use a MIDI monitor you see that the most recent bank/program message and the last message of each active CC type are being played at the start of that new second item. Reasons this feels wrong: Opening the MIDI Editor confirms there actually isn't data at that point - the activity is "out of range" (before the visible start). So just as with notes that are out of view I don't see why the CC messages are showing in the UI and being played here. Unless the point of this mode was specifically to play "out of view" bank/program & CC messages, I can't see why it should behave any differently than the "Allow Trim" pref being on. Negative consequences: If you then change CC messages (like hold/cutoff or bank&program) in the new first item after doing that split, it'll then jump back to the previous value at the start of the second. Also, these additional bank/program messages at the start of each item created by a split will stop the tail of the sound on some modules/synths.. even if it's sending the current value again. But is this is a candidate for a bug report, or intended (useful) behavior? My personal feeling is "if it's out of visible range, don't play it".. I had imagined the pref to not trim was intended just to preserve the data, not change the way it plays. Cheers drew

Actually, if you zoom in the main window enough, you'll even see an indicator for that event at the very start of the second item, whereas the MIDI editor says it stayed at the point you inserted it. I don't know, but perhaps this is somehow related with the MIDI item drag issue Lawrence posted yesterday. (Have a look at the vid he made. Fortunately Schwa already said that one will be fixed soon.) Events that are out of range should of course not be played, imo. I can't see any benefit from that, so I think it should be considered false/buggy behaviour. On a side note, I am very glad you posted this, as I didn't know what this option does. This is (apart from this issue) way more like I want to edit MIDI. Not being able to redrag splitted midi items was buggering me a lot. Thanks for the heads up. Would be cooler if the active region of the midi item was indicated in the MIDI editor, though. It's a bit irritating to see the whole length of the item, with no clue what is actually going to play.

Ok - thanks for these responses. Good to know I'm not alone on that. Anyone else using the mode? I'm really very curious to see if there's a use or benefit to REAPER playing MIDI messages from before the visible range in this mode.

RE: Question for those who have "Allow trim of MIDI items when splitting" pref turned off

I've just started using this mode, after inadvertently introducing some nasty double notes by splitting MIDI items. SONAR has a much nicer way of handling splitting MIDI clips, which is possible because it allows clips to overlap. Basically, if you split a clip midway through a note, that note is not truncated and remains in the clip to the left of the split. This is exactly what I want in most instances. I find the behaviour showing all the notes in the piano roll despite them not being played quite confusing. Perhaps there is aonther REAPER configuration setting somewhere that I am missing, but as it stands, I feel that this area of MIDI editing has some way to go to be as intuitive as SONAR. I often want to cut bits out of a second take and drop them into a gap in the first, but with instruments like piano, the cut cannot be a clean one. There is no point where all current notes have stopped - you need the notes before the split point to carry on playing to the end of their original duration, while the new notes take over. Mark
