Error Seeking

I have compressed a movie with xvid (Koepi's 17022003-1 and later with Nic's XVID - 16/02/03) and it plays fine if you are just playing it, but if you seek somewhere within the first 3 minutes 20 seconds it stalls. When I have it in an avi container (before audio is included) it takes a long time to seek. Like it has to go back a long way to find a keyframe, and when I put it into the ogg container (both with and without audio) it will freeze on the first viewable frame after the problem is done, and sit on that frame until the movie plays to that point. I at first thought that it was a problem with TCMP, but it does it in WMP too. Then I tried other decoders and it does the same thing with the Divx 5.03 decoder, and Nic's Xvid decoder just skips it all together and starts playing right after problem. When I open the video in VirtualDubMod, and seek into that area it prints "Warning: Nothing to output BFrame decoder lag" for just a second then it doesn't show it again, and the seeking is very slow (Like an avi without keyframes) I am not sure what this problem could be but I am wondering if it isn't a xvid error now. Thanks for the help, TelemachusMH

While you have loaded it in Vdub, use the "jump to keyframe" buttons. You'll have a big surprise ...

RE: Error Seeking

You are right that the first three minutes doesn't have a keyframe in it, but why did that happen when one should have been put it in every 250 frames at least. Is this a known bug? I haven't had this happen before. I also find it strange that it didn't do it during the credits, it correctly put the keyframes every 250 frames. TelemachusMH

RE: Error Seeking

For me, it was only the first few minutes that weren't right, so I just reencoded them making sure that xvid was set with a lower max keyframe value. Then I cut off the beggining of my first video and appeneded it to the new beginning. TelemachusMH

I just tried several different ones like 75, 125, 150, 175, and used the one that worked and was about the right size. Just try serveral different ones and use the best one. TelemachusMH
