sometimes a bluray I'll rip with commercial tools (anydvd or dvdfab) will be badly ripped. i.e. I might have made a mistake (such as not region freeing it) or it might not have handled all the protections 100% correctly (I've noticed this with dvdfab and fox that sometimes it fails in the java code on my dune while it plays fine on other devices). With 2D BRs I can sometimes fix this manually by going into the file system and adjusting the text files in the JAR subdirs (for instance to force it to skip the test that is choking my dune). However, I don't know how to "extract" a 3D BR, edit the content, and then rebuild into a valid iso. any pointers?

anydvd and dvdfab both have problems. AnyDVD has problems when it makes an ISO with warner brothers blurays (though if I don't have it make the iso and build it myself it works fine). DVDFab generally works, but it breaks for me on some fox blurays (those I can generally manually edit to get around). MakeMKV isn't great for making full discs backups. I consider those 3 to be the top of the heap.
Personally I rip all my discs with a simple iso creator with encryption kept intact (in a drive that is not bus-encryption-capable in case the disc is bus-encryption-enabled) - finally I'll check with BlurayTestAndDecrypt if the ripped iso is really error free. And now I can remove the protection from the ripped iso with all the tools available and there's no need to worry about read errors from the drive...
nalor: I agree (see my concept of using your tool w/ ddrescue, even in the presence of 2 damaged discs can recover it). With that said, the java oriented protections get in the way and that's usually what I have to fix manually. i.e. your tool wont remove region protection. Even if it did remove it from the hdmv code (that's easy) it have to trap out the psr20 calls that java can make as well
Usually there's a simple rule: if you can do it manually, it can also be done programmatically (by software) :) So if you can tell me how to fix the java & hdmv protections, I can integrate it into my tool (or at least try to).
agreed. but part of me doesn't want to talk about it publicly as I dont want the studios to remove this functionality :) (yes, a little selfish), I'll describe it in PMs if you want.
so what I learned my just doing, I can extract the badly ripped 3D BD ISO which results in a directory with more than a BD50 of content, fix the structure, rebuild it as an ISO with dvdfab and dvdfab will do the right thing with the ms2ts and ssif files and make a correct file system.
