eq-ing out a buzz

Advertising

MessageAuthor

I've been given a section of audio that has a serious buzz, and have been asked to "eq out" that buzz if possible. The audio is taken from an interview shot on a mini dv camcorder, a single mic. And the buzz is quite loud. My question: Does the digi 001 have any sort of function that will search for, or show me that frequency? Is there a trick to finding it? Tips on removal? Thanks alot. Joe B.

If it's broadband buzz there is no way you will eq it out. Even if you could isolate some of it and flip the phase you will probably find it modulates enough that it will not work to minimize it. You need noise reductions tools like Waves Restoration, DINR, etc., there are quite a few of them around. You'll have to do some research, I don't know which ones are available for your platform. You need to use a parametric EQ. Set a very narrow "q" or bandwidth, boost level a few dB, and sweep the center frequency till you hear that buzz jump out of the speaker at you. Then just cut it(but as little as possible, the more you cut the more it affects the surrounding frequencies). Since it's not a sine wave and there may be other frequencies making up that buzz you may need to take a few frequencies out.

RE: eq-ing out a buzz

you should download the demo of the Waves Restoration bundle. The plugin X-Hum should be able to help you out. You won't be able to totally eradicate it but you probably attenuate it a little. The X-Hum plugin is a VERY fine notch filter, but it can also remove the odd or even harmonics of the main frequency. You can probably use a combination of X-Hum and X-Noise to clean it up. If you have a section of audio where just the hum is present (no talking) you could train a noiseprint in X-Noise and try using that as well to attenuate the buzz a little. I've successfully done this on a few guitar tracks where we couldn't cure amp hum at the source. Cheers, Marcus
