U2 cover - ruff mix

Advertising

MessageAuthor

I've been playing around with a cover of "Unforgettable Fire" for the past week or so. I put a drum and bass track together with this scratch vocal and a friend in Brazil recorded the keyboard parts to that and sent them to me. A fella in NY is planning on recording the guitar tracks soon and friend in Australia is going to add the final bass track. There are a few more little parts missing besides the guitar track but this mix is really close I think. SW

Wow Scaler, You really have Bono down! The mix sounds good to me (through a pair of Sony MDR-V250's). Bass is nice and punchy. Vox sit well. Two things that come to mind are that the drums need a little work (kick sounds great, but snare is kind of weak and maybe muddy). Also, I feel like maybe the synths sound kinda small for the anthemic scale of U2's sound. Maybe if they were a bit more atmospheric and bigger (spead more across the stereo field)? Then again, maybe I don't have a clue!!!;) Still very impressed with the overall work. Kyle

The snare is mixed with a low tom drum....just going for the sound of the original. You think maybe the tom volume is overpowering the snare crack too much? For now, I 'm just using a Cakewalk TTS softsynth. I really need a good drum sample prog like EZD. I'm still experimenting with the keyboard mix so that's still a work in progress. The original song used some really good ethereal sounds that are hard to simulate. The guitar tracks may add a little extra dimension when they are added ... not sure. The guitarist tells me that he will be going for the guitar style that Edge used in the Paris live performance instead of the studio version. As it is now, there is a lot of delay(234 ms) and reverb on the two different arpeggio keyboard tracks and they are panned about 50% right and left. I could try spacing them a little wider. What are you thoughts on the orchestra section of the song? I'm still working on that part too.

Wow, if you'd told me that was Bono singing I wouldn't have questioned you once. Damn fine job so far!
