Im looking for a descent vocal mic for under $ 300. Right now im using a Shure 58 Mic, and it's cool and everything for a mic thats under $100, but im looking for a step up... Can anyone help??? Also what are some plug ins that you just cannot do without???
Rode NT1 is exellent for the money. It can emphasise the 3-4k region on some sources, but on others it is just right. I have used it in preference to mics costing ten times it's value on some singers. The presence lift it brings to a recording is not hard to counter with EQ, if the situation does not warrant it. Definitely give one a try.
One plugin I would recommend for vocals is Waves Renaissance Vox. Even if you prefer a bit more tweakability when it comes to the mix, these are very good for setting up a nice monitor mix quickly. I use them on the final mix.
i've had excellent results with a Shure KSM27 condenser as well. If you can go into a store and try them out with headphones, it's a lot easier to make the choice to see what works best with your voice.
