I struggle with terminology

Advertising

MessageAuthor

Been reading these forums for a while now (I know, should I still be posting in newbieland? guess I'm a slow learner) and what I struggle with is some of the terms used to describe the quality (or lack of) sounds. For example:- Muddy - I understand this Thin - this one too, but:- Brittle? Airy? etc. Is there a resource somewhere that can give me examples of what these terms, and others, sound like?

Brittle and airy would mean something with boosted high freqs, in my dictionary. Brittle in the annoying way, and airy in a nice, sparkling way.

What for some is "warm" for other is "blanket over the speakers", what for someone is "bright and present" for some others is "fizzy" and "icepick-y"... This scientific terminology can get complex! :D

Well-known producer: "I don't like the sound of the piano" (a really nice Yamaha) Me (thinking it actually sounds pretty good): "In what way?" Well-known producer: "I don't know, can't you make it...... different?" Me: "What, like a saxophone?" Well-known producer (missing the irony completely): "No.... just different" I've been dealing with idiots like this all my life. Heaven knows how they ever managed to get into the business.
