recomp presets

so in the tutorial video for reaper it says you can emulate different hardware compressors because of how advanced it is. so does anyone have presets the wouldn't mind sharing? I searched the stash and didn't find any presets. I'm a bit retarded when it comes to compression and don't quite have the ear for hearing big differences in settings beyond threshold, attack, and release. It would be really cool to start a compressor emulation project where you compressor geniuses out there try to replicate different models and release the presets.

RE: recomp presets

I echo what Bfloyd says. The pre-sets are a good starting point. There's no real way of standardizing compression as every input source will be different. You just have to use your ears. What I do quite often if solo the drums and then add the bass and play with the compression a little. Then add a guitar and then other parts. This is not a mix just a kind of practice to see if I can get everything to sit well. Also walk away from your speakers now and then and see how the sound transmits. What may sound great close up may not be as good a few feet away.Never mix in headphones as they give a false representation.

RE: recomp presets

something for the drums ;) Mix ALL your drum tracks into one group, then insert two ReaComp: 1st ReaComp: Pre-Comp - 0 Atack - 0 Release - 50 Ratio - 4.0 Knee Size - 20 LowPass - 20000 HiPass - 60 RMS Size - 1 Treshold - should give you max -12dB reduction on snare. Wet +6dB Dry +0dB <-- THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!! 2nd ReaComp: Pre-Comp - 0 Atack - 1 Release - 100 Ratio - 2.0 Knee Size - 0 LowPass - 20000 HiPass - 0 RMS Size - 0 Treshold - should give you max -4dB reduction on snare or basedrum, not more! Wet +1dB Dry -120dB Have Fun! :) P.S. Most importans thing is to have drums mixed not too bassy, or trebly, just quite natural. After compression you'll propobly have to volume down OverHeads for about 3-6dB.

RE: recomp presets

Second for the drums is if you've got unequal loudness of every hit of a snare or basedrum, you can use compression like this: ReaComp Pre-Comp - 10 Atack - 0 Release - 200-400 (the longer sustain, the longer release) Ratio - 4.0 Knee Size - 5 LowPass - 20000 HiPass - 0 RMS Size - 80 for snare, 120 for basedrum. Treshold - you should get no gain reduction for the most quet hists, and maximum -6dB reduction for the loudest ones. Wet +3dB For bass guitar, compression like this should be handy: ReaComp: Pre-Comp - 0 Atack - 8 Release - 30 Ratio - inf Knee Size - 1 LowPass - 20000 HiPass - 0 RMS Size - 5 Treshold - should give you max -6dB reduction for the loudest notes. Wet +3dB Dry -120dB

RE: recomp presets

I'm sure everyone has their own tastes but I don't like to compress the hi-hats with the other drums. I do like to compress the kick, snare, and toms together though. Just my style:).

RE: recomp presets

I was referring to sampled drums only. I never have to worry about the overheads:).
