Voice Track EQ Help Request

MessageAuthor

Hello, I've recently starting recording Let's Play's and am now researching voice processing to make it sound professional and good. The issue I'm having is I can't do EQ. I just don't have the ear for it, I have followed many tutorials and read many articles, but I can't improve my voice, sure I can change how it sounds, but it's all meaningless to my ears if that makes sense. I can't make EQ work, at all, to the point where I find it useless, and just don't use it. I followed Elija Luciens "Reaper for voice actors" youtube series (excellent for beginners like me, I highly recommend those videos, and he's fun to watch) and that is about the extent of my sound processing knowledge. So, my question is this, if I record myself saying some test sentence (maybe "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" or whatever you recommend) could someone play with the EQ on it and tell me what settings sound good for my voice? The plugins I use are (in order): 1: ReaFir (to remove background noise of my PC fans, they're pretty loud) but this removes them completely. 2: This is where I would have ReaEQ, but since I can't get anything from it, it is disabled. 3: ReaComp (-30db threshold/3:1 ratio) vocal enhancement 4: ReaGate 5: ReaComp (De-Esser). If you would like the audio recording of the test sentence to be rendered with any of these effects just let me know. Any and all help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

RE: Voice Track EQ Help Request

If you are in such a high noise environment that you have to resort to restoration techniques (noise filtering and gating) to even begin with the vocal... you'll be faced with limited choices and the discussion would be more about saving it already compromised than eq'ing to taste. Start by getting longer mic cables or whatever you need to get away from the noise. ReaFir is a rather crude tool when it comes to noise reduction too. You're probably removing half or more of the vocal content with the noise. Get rid of the noise at the source. Put the main effort here. Don't entertain the thought of fixing it after the fact. That's magnitudes harder to impossible. Turn all the plugins off. Don't pull up a plugin unless you have a clear idea of what you want to do with the sound. You don't start randomly eq'ing, compressing, and gating. There are no more presets for that than there is a preset for what volume you happen to want to listen to your music at today. That's about all I can speculate without seeing/hearing the project. :)

Do you sing well? Do you like the sound of your voice? Because if you don't then it's possible that you can do a ton of processing and still not be pleased with what you hear. Just a thought. Kind of a "you can't polish a turd into a diamond" thing.
